Column - Time to become courageous
The European Union is an unprecedented experiment – voluntary, piecemeal political and economic integration of dozens of diverse territories and nationalities – in pursuit of peace, prosperity and maximal individual freedom. Its success in sustaining peace has exceeded the wildest dreams of its designers. The Union’s profound achievements in growing and sharing prosperity are a personal experience; born in one of Europe’s poorest countries in a house devoid of electricity, running water or indoor toilet, I have firsthand knowledge of the critical impact of European solidarity in enabling peace and prosperity on the one hand while, on the other, secularising public policy in a hitherto theocratic state, fostering new freedom and rights for citizens. Nothing shapes attitudes better than lived experience.
